For this month’s topic, we would like to share some thoughts about Meditation & Breath.
Our breath is an essential and vital part of our lives, exists in our awareness, yet often goes unnoticed in our daily routines. We live with this relationship from our first breath to our last, in a constant partnership through the simple process of inhalation and exhalation.
This basic experience of a few short breaths inspired the inclusion of Meditation and breathwork into the conscious realm of our healing practices. It introduces a modern element to raise awareness for visitors to the Sanctuary, sharing that tools are available to support their health and wellbeing.
In meditation, the Breath is the instrument through which we connect to our inner selves. Learning how to breathe in ways that enhance our well-being can be distinct from this.
Both aspects are dealt with below:
Breath In Meditation
Our colleague, author, and healerFeroze Dada, who arrived at the Sanctuary many years ago, teaches meditation and emphasises the power of the breath in meditation practice.
In Anapanna Buddhist meditation, awareness of the breath is emphasised because it is always with us and constant. By focusing on our inhalations and exhalations, we can maintain our connection to the sense of touch as the breath moves in and out of our nostrils. The subtlety here is that the sensation of our breath (the sensation of touch) in our nostrils is the focus of our attention; the breath itself being the instrument that makes it happen. When our focus wavers due to a thought or distraction, we can gently return our awareness to the sensation of our breath.
This discipline of our mind on fine-tuning our awareness and focus is a precursor in Vipassana meditation—an established Buddhist meditation process that trains the mind not to react in a preconditioned manner, thereby keeping us rooted in the present moment. This meditation practice works on the body-mind axis to reduce the preconditioned response, leading to more thoughtful present-moment awareness, often called Mindfulness.
Sufi Meditation (or muraqabah) focuses on breathing into the heart chakra by moving away from mental senses to inner senses. The practice involves stilling the mind and senses to experience the heart’s inner reality.

Breath Work in Wellbeing
Taking a Breath In
Breathing begins when the brain detects that the body requires more oxygen. It sends signals to the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs to contract. As the diaphragm pulls down, it creates more space in the chest, and the ribs expand. This results in lower pressure inside the chest compared to the outside. Because of this pressure difference, air is pushed into the lungs through the windpipe and bronchial tubes, filling tiny air sacs called alveoli. In the alveoli, oxygen from the air passes into the blood, while carbon dioxide leaves the blood to be exhaled. This gas exchange occurs naturally, as oxygen moves from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Breathing Out
Exhaling is the process of releasing air from the lungs. It can be gentle or forceful, depending on the situation. Usually, when you exhale, the diaphragm and rib muscles relax. As they do, the space in the chest decreases, pushing air out through the windpipe. This air is rich in carbon dioxide, which the body needs to expel. During exercise or exertion, exhalation can become more active. The abdominal muscles may help push the air out more forcefully, enabling quicker carbon dioxide removal.
Emotional relationship with the breath
Breath work can significantly enhance your emotional relationship with yourself in multiple ways. First, paying attention to your breath increases awareness of your thoughts and feelings, enabling better understanding without judgment. Deep breathing stimulates relaxation (through the Vagus Nerve), helping to reduce stress and anxiety, making it easier to handle difficult emotions. Furthermore, practising breath work allows you to pause and respond thoughtfully in emotional situations rather than reacting impulsively. Focusing on your breath keeps you anchored in the present moment, reducing worries about the past or future. This practice encourages self-compassion, helping you accept your emotions as a natural part of being human. Regular breathwork can also boost your intuition, guiding you to make choices that align with your true self. Lastly, it can help release negative emotions, creating space for positivity. Incorporating breath work into your daily routine can lead to a kinder, clearer, and more resilient emotional self.
Spiritual Relationship with the Breath
Mindful breathing can greatly support spiritual growth by increasing your presence and grounding you in the moment, enabling a deeper connection with your inner self. This practice raises awareness of your thoughts and emotions, promoting introspection vital for spiritual exploration. By calming the mind and body, mindful breathing fosters a sense of inner peace, resolves emotional blockages, and forms a basis for more profound meditation practices. Furthermore, this technique nurtures compassion and gratitude, which are fundamental in many spiritual paths, ultimately aiding transformative experiences on your spiritual journey.
If you would like to learn about the technical and emotional aspects of breath work, we would suggest the following books:
“Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor – Nestor explores the history and science of breathing, offering insights into how our modern breathing habits are detrimental to our health and how we can improve them.
“Breathe” by Dr. Belisa Vranich – This book provides practical breathwork techniques aimed at reducing stress, increasing energy, and improving overall wellness.
“The Art of Breathing” by Danny Penman – This book combines breath work with mindfulness and meditation practices, offering a comprehensive approach to reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity.
The Mind, Body, and Soul Connection: Why It Matters for True Well-Being
We often treat these as separate entities. However, ancient healing traditions and modern scientific research confirm that true health and harmony come from understanding and nurturing the deep connection between all three.
When we focus only on the physical body, we may struggle with unresolved emotional or spiritual imbalances. Similarly, if we neglect our physical health while prioritising our mental and spiritual development, we might experience fatigue, chronic illness, or emotional instability. Recognising and honouring this holistic connection allows for deeper healing and personal transformation.
Understanding the Wellness Trinity Connection
The Mind: The Power of Thought and Emotion
The mind is the control centre of our perception, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. It influences how we respond to life’s challenges and, more importantly, how we store and process emotions. Scientific research in psychoneuroimmunology (the study of how thoughts and emotions impact the immune system) has shown that chronic stress, negative thinking, and unresolved trauma can contribute to a weakened immune response, increased inflammation, and a higher risk of physical illness.
Our thoughts generate chemical reactions in the brain that directly impact the body. When we experience stress or anxiety, the brain releases cortisol and adrenaline—hormones that prepare the body for fight or flight. While these responses are useful in short bursts, prolonged activation leads to burnout, tension, and even chronic conditions such as heart disease, digestive disorders, and autoimmune issues.
Conversely, cultivating a positive mindset through meditation, mindfulness, gratitude, and affirmations has been shown to rewire neural pathways, strengthening emotional resilience and fostering well-being. Studies have demonstrated that individuals who engage in mindfulness practices show lower levels of stress hormones, improved immune function, and greater emotional balance.
The Body: The Physical Vessel
The body serves as the physical manifestation of our energy and emotions. It is deeply interconnected with both the mind and soul, often holding onto stress, trauma, and unresolved emotional experiences. When we suppress emotions rather than process them, they can manifest as chronic pain, tension, digestive issues, or other health concerns.
For example, studies in somatic therapy indicate that trauma and emotional pain can become “trapped” in the body, leading to physical symptoms that persist even after the initial emotional wound has faded from conscious awareness. This is why many holistic healing practices focus on movement, breathwork, and energy release to facilitate physical and emotional healing.
Physical movement, such as yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or even walking in nature, helps to release stored energy and restore the natural flow of vitality within the body. These practices also activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which encourages deep relaxation, healing, and a sense of grounding.
Energy healing techniques, such as Reiki and vibrational medicine, work on an even deeper level, removing energetic blockages that contribute to physical discomfort. These healing modalities encourage the body’s natural ability to rebalance and restore itself.
The Soul: The Core Essence of Being
The soul represents our deepest essence, intuition, and connection to the universe. When we feel aligned with our soul, life flows with ease, and we experience a sense of purpose, peace, and fulfilment. However, when we are disconnected from our soul’s wisdom, we may feel lost, anxious, or lacking in direction.
Many ancient traditions have recognised the importance of tending to the soul through practices such as meditation, prayer, energy healing, and connection with nature. The idea is that when we nurture our soul’s connection, we open ourselves to higher guidance, inner wisdom, and emotional healing.
Recent studies in vibrational medicine and energy healing have shown that sound frequencies, Reiki, and meditation can shift the body’s energetic state, creating profound healing on both a physical and emotional level. Researchers have found that sound frequencies and energy healing techniques can alter brainwave activity, reduce stress, and promote deep states of relaxation, leading to a greater connection with the soul’s wisdom.
Why Is This Connection Important?
The mind, body, and soul function as a unified system. When we ignore one aspect, we create imbalances that may eventually manifest in different areas of life. Honouring the connection between these three elements allows us to experience:
Holistic Healing: Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, addressing all three aspects leads to lasting well-being and transformation.
Emotional Balance: Recognising how our emotions influence physical health allows us to process and release stress more effectively.
Spiritual Fulfilment: Strengthening the connection to the soul brings greater clarity, purpose, and a sense of alignment with life’s natural flow.
For instance, research on epigenetics has shown that emotional trauma and chronic stress can alter gene expression, influencing long-term physical and emotional health. By working with the mind-body-soul connection, we can shift these patterns, promoting healing not only in ourselves but also for future generations.
How to Strengthen the Mind-Body-Soul Connection
To create a deeper connection between the mind, body, and soul, it is essential to integrate daily practices that promote balance and alignment. Here are some powerful ways to cultivate this connection:
1. Daily Mindfulness and Meditation Mindfulness helps calm the mind, increase awareness, and bring attention to the present moment. Meditation has been shown to reduce stress hormones, improve immune function, and promote emotional well-being.
2. Energy Healing (Reiki, Qi Energy Work, Vibrational Medicine) Energy healing techniques help to remove blockages, balance chakras, and restore the body’s natural energetic flow. Regular Reiki or vibrational healing sessions can enhance emotional and physical healing.
3. Movement and Breathwork Gentle physical movements such as yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or even conscious breathing techniques can release stagnant energy and reconnect the body with the breath, promoting vitality and relaxation.
4. Sound Healing and Vibrational Medicine Tuning into sound frequencies, whether through singing bowls, binaural beats, or chanting, has been shown to positively impact brainwaves and promote deep relaxation and healing.
5. Nature Connection Spending time in nature helps us ground our energy, recalibrate our nervous system, and reconnect with the rhythms of the earth. Walking barefoot, forest bathing, or simply sitting by a tree can help restore balance.
6. Listening to Intuition and Following the Soul’s Path Taking time for self-reflection, journaling, and inner listening can strengthen our soul connection. Tuning into our intuition helps us make aligned choices that support our highest well-being.
Embracing True Balance and Healing
True healing begins when we acknowledge that our mind, body, and soul are not separate but deeply intertwined. By welcoming this connection, we open ourselves to greater health, peace, and spiritual fulfilment.

The path of a healer is not something we consciously decide; it is often revealed to us through the whispers of our soul. For many, the recognition of this calling begins with a longing—a sense of purpose that feels beyond the ordinary that we often do not see, or deny.
If you’ve ever felt drawn to help others through emotional, physical, or spiritual pain, or found yourself fascinated by the unseen forces of energy and vibration, you may already be walking the healer’s path.
Being a healer in vibrational medicine and energy healing is deeply tied to your connection to your own soul. Your soul is not just your essence; it is also the bridge to the energy that flows through all things. This connection to your soul is the foundation of healing work—without it, the ability to support others diminishes, and you may experience symptoms of imbalance within yourself.
Your Connection to Your Soul: The Foundation of Healing
Your soul is the anchor for your energy, purpose, and ability to engage in healing practices. When you are connected to your soul, you feel grounded, guided, loved and whole. This connection allows you to sense the needs of others intuitively, harmonise with universal energy, and channel healing vibrations effectively.
Signs of Being Soul-Connected:
A Deep Sense of Inner Peace: Even during challenging times, you feel a sense of calm and trust in life’s flow.
Clear Intuition: You are guided by subtle inner knowing that helps you navigate your decisions and interactions.
A Calling to Serve: You feel a powerful urge to contribute to the well-being of others, whether through listening, comforting, or energetic practices.
When you are deeply attuned to your soul, healing energy flows effortlessly. Your sensitivity to vibrational frequencies sharpens, and you can sense imbalances in yourself and others. This connection is the hallmark of a true energy healer.
Symptoms of Soul Disconnection
Disconnection from your soul can block your ability to heal or even recognise your gifts. This imbalance often manifests as physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms:
Emotional Exhaustion: You may feel drained, irritable, or overwhelmed by life’s demands.
Loss of Purpose: A lack of direction or a sense that you’re “going through the motions” without fulfilment.
Difficulty Tuning into Intuition: You might second-guess your instincts or feel out of sync with your inner guidance.
Physical Ailments: Chronic fatigue, tension, or aches with no clear medical explanation could signal energetic misalignment.
Unexplained Sadness or Longing: A feeling of emptiness or yearning, as though something vital is missing.
Life-Changing Cataclysmic events: You may experience trauma or huge shifts that ‘force’ the changes in an uncomfortable way.
These symptoms are your soul’s way of calling you back to alignment. Healers often encounter these challenges as part of their journey, particularly if they neglect their own healing in the process of helping others.
Recognising the Call to Healing
If you suspect you may be a healer, the signs will often reveal themselves through your experiences and relationships. These signs are not random; they are invitations from your soul to step into your healing potential.
You Feel Drawn to Healing Practices
Perhaps you’ve always been curious about energy healing, Reiki, or vibrational medicine, even if you’ve never practised them formally. Books like Hands of Light by Barbara Brennan or Breath by James Nestor may resonate deeply, sparking an insatiable desire to learn more. This curiosity is often the first clue that you are attuned to the vibrational nature of the universe.
You Experience Empathy on a Deep Level
As a healer, your sensitivity to others’ emotions and energy is heightened. You might feel their pain as though it were your own or intuitively know what someone needs to feel better. This ability, while beautiful, can also be overwhelming if you don’t maintain strong energetic boundaries.
You Sense Energy in Your Body and Environment
Many healers report sensations like tingling in their hands, warmth in their heart space, or an awareness of unseen forces in the room. These experiences point to your innate ability to perceive and work with energy fields.
You’ve Been Through Personal Healing Transformations
Often, healers are born from their own journeys of healing. If you’ve faced significant emotional, physical, or spiritual challenges and emerged with newfound wisdom or strength, this might be your soul preparing you to guide others.
Steps to Deepen Your Connection and Discover Your Gifts
If these experiences resonate, here’s how to strengthen your soul connection and step fully into your healing potential:
1. Engage in Self-Healing Practices
Before you can support others, it’s essential to heal yourself. Practices like meditation, breathwork, or chakra alignment can help you reconnect with your soul and release energetic blockages.
Meditation: Quiet your mind to hear the whispers of your soul. Guided meditations focused on energy cleansing and grounding can be particularly helpful.
Breathwork: Techniques explored in James Nestor’s Breath can deepen your connection to the life force energy that sustains you.
2. Honour Your Own Energy
Healers often give so much of themselves that they risk burnout. Setting boundaries, practising self-care, and replenishing your energy are crucial for maintaining balance. Remember: you can only heal others effectively when your own energy is aligned.
3. Explore Healing Modalities
Experiment with different forms of energy healing to discover what resonates most with you. Reiki, sound therapy, or vibrational medicine may feel like natural extensions of your gifts. Start with workshops or introductory classes to gain hands-on experience.
4. Connect with Nature
Nature is a powerful source of grounding and healing. Spending time in natural settings helps to recalibrate your energy field and deepen your connection to universal vibrations.
5. Trust Your Intuition
As you begin to work with energy, trust the insights and sensations that arise. Your soul and intuition are your most reliable guides on this path.
6. Seek Guidance and Community
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can support your growth. Joining a healing community like The Sylvan Healing Sanctuary can provide resources to nurture your abilities.
The Journey of a Healer
Recognising your role as a healer is not about fulfilling a predefined checklist; it’s about tuning into the rhythm of your soul and answering its call. As you deepen your connection to your inner self, you’ll find that the symptoms of imbalance fade, replaced by clarity, purpose, and an expanding sense of love and service.
The journey of a healer is transformative—not just for those you help but also for yourself. Through this work, you’ll align with the universal energies that bind us all, creating harmony within and around you.
If this guide resonates with your experience, it may be time to explore your potential further. Healing is a gift that begins with you—and it has the power to transform the world.
Barbara Ann Brennan’s Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field is an essential read for anyone on a journey of spiritual and holistic healing.
First published in 1987, it remains a cornerstone in the field of energy healing, offering insights into the human aura, chakras, and the transformative power of energy work. Brennan, a former NASA physicist turned healer, blends scientific exploration with spiritual understanding, creating a bridge between the physical and metaphysical worlds.
The book begins with an exploration of the human energy field, or aura, which Brennan describes as a multilayered energy system surrounding the body. This aura interacts with both our emotional and physical health, and she draws connections between imbalances in this energy field and various illnesses. Her work is grounded in the belief that healing can occur when these energetic blockages are removed, allowing life force energy, or “chi,” to flow freely through the body.
One of the most compelling aspects of Hands of Light is its detailed descriptions of the human energy system, including its layers and the chakras, presented alongside colourful illustrations and diagrams. These visuals make it easier to understand complex concepts, and they are invaluable for both beginners and experienced energy healers. Brennan also provides a range of exercises and meditations designed to help readers tune into their own energy fields and develop their abilities to perceive and work with energy.
Brennan’s unique background as a physicist gives her work a scientific edge, which will appeal to readers who may be sceptical of energy healing. She weaves quantum physics into her explanations, suggesting that our understanding of energy healing is not at odds with modern science, but rather an extension of it. This integration of science and spirituality is a key feature of the book, and it helps ground her ideas in a framework that is accessible and logical.
Throughout Hands of Light, Brennan offers numerous case studies and personal experiences from her practice as an energy healer. These anecdotes add depth and credibility to her teachings, illustrating how energy healing has impacted real people. From clearing emotional traumas to alleviating physical symptoms, Brennan provides examples of how tuning into the subtle body can lead to profound healing.
One of the core messages of the book is that healing is not just about addressing physical symptoms, but also about emotional and spiritual growth. Brennan encourages readers to see their own potential for self-healing and empowerment, and her compassionate tone fosters a sense of self-acceptance and transformation. This focus on personal growth resonates deeply with individuals seeking holistic healing and spiritual alignment.
Ultimately, Hands of Light is more than just a guide to healing—it’s a spiritual journey that invites readers to explore the energetic underpinnings of their lives. It offers a blend of scientific insight and spiritual wisdom that encourages healing on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Whether you’re a seasoned energy healer or someone beginning to explore alternative healing methods, this book provides a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.
Barbara Ann Brennan’s ability to marry science and spirituality makes this an informative and transformative guide. For readers of The Sylvan Healing Sanctuary and those interested in holistic healing, it’s a valuable resource for deepening their understanding of the human energy field and exploring the power of energy healing as a tool for personal growth and wellness.
Some books remain valuable over time, teaching us important lessons about how to live better lives. “The Power of the Spoken Word” by Florence Scovel Shinn is one such book. It shows us how the things we say can change our lives, which is an idea that fits perfectly with energy healing.
Florence Scovel Shinn was a leading thinker in the early 20th century. She believed that the words we speak are powerful tools that can create happiness, success, and health. This idea is very similar to energy healing, where healing is thought to occur when energy within our body is balanced and positive.
Shinn teaches us that by speaking positively, we can shape our own lives. This is a central belief in energy healing too, which suggests that positive words can improve the energy fields around our body, helping both our minds and bodies feel better.
The book is filled with practical tips on how to use words to improve your life. For anyone involved in energy healing, these tips show how spoken words can be powerful tools for healing. For example, Shinn encourages the use of positive affirmations like “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better”. Such positive statements can help improve one’s outlook, which is an important part of recovery in energy healing.
Shinn also talks about the law of attraction—the idea that like attracts like. She explains how expressing gratitude through our words can increase our ability to heal and to attract good things into our lives. These concepts are very helpful for people practicing energy healing.
“Every word we say is like a brushstroke in the painting of our lives,” writes Shinn. This is a lovely way of reminding us that our words have power—they can hurt or heal, bring darkness or light. It is up to us to choose words that heal, that bring joy to ourselves and others.
“The Power of the Spoken Word” is more than just a book. It is a helpful tool for anyone looking to bring more positivity into their life. It shows us that our words can truly shape our world. Let’s use them to heal and to help others.
